The instructions here are for those who create and maintain photo galleries that require frequent updates. For example, you need to maintain an 'employees' photo gallery.

To minimize your workload, you'll need to do some extra work each time a new web page is created. This extra work will make adding future images to it fast and easy, especially when other parts are automated. A little work now will save a lot of work in the future.

It's assumed that you're running RoboPhoto for the first time. If that's not the case, the instructions below may differ slightly. You can start over with respect to the program's configuration by selecting the 'Start Over' option after right clicking on any wizard screen - that will delete all of RoboPhoto's configuration files just as if you were running the program for the first time.

If an instruction does not apply to you, simply ignore it. For example, if you won't be georeferencing images, skip steps #9, #10, and 3 of the 4 GPS Misc Options in step #8.

Initial Program Setup
You only need to do this once:

1) Register the program and remove the demo limitations by right clicking on any wizard screen followed by 'Unlock Demo'.

2) From the main wizard screen, select 'Configure RoboPhoto'.

3) Click the 'Next' button. The 'RoboPhoto Settings' screen will appear.

4) Select the 'Images' tab and specify the default image source directory. This should be the same as your camera's default output directory.

5) Select the 'HTML' tab and enter your e-mail address in the 'Your E-mail Address' field.

6) Select the 'Uploading' tab and configure the FTP settings.

7) Test the FTP setup by pressing the 'Test' button.

8) Select the 'Misc' tab and set these values:
  • UseSameNameHcfFile=true
  • GpsReadFromExif=true
  • GpsWriteToExif=true
  • GpsWriteToExifMustSucceed=true
To set, you must check the appropriate box AND type the word true in the 'Current Value...' field.

9) Select the 'GPS' tab. Check the 'Use the Garmin GPS...' box and specify the GPS COM port. Use 'Auto' if you're unsure of the port.

10) Make sure the GPS contains a tracklog, then test it by clicking the 'Test' button.

RoboPhoto is now configured.

From this point forward, you'll only be creating new webpages and/or adding new images to existing ones.

Creating New Web Pages
Follow these steps to create new pages. The extra work in steps #9 thru #13 will save time in the future. Again, ignore any steps that do not apply to you.

1) Take your pictures while the GPS is recording a tracklog. Click here for more info.

2) Back at the computer, plug the GPS into the appropriate COM port and turn it on.

3) Transfer the images from your camera to RoboPhoto's image source directory.

4) Start RoboPhoto, select 'Create a new webpage', then click the 'Next' button.

5) Confirm that the image source directory points to the camera's output directory.

6) Check the 'Perform other image operations' box.

7) Select 'EXIF Editor' then press the 'Now' button. The 'EXIF Editor' screen will appear, loading all of the images in the image source directory.

8) Add EXIF info (like the image title and description) to each image.

9) When done entering all of the EXIF info, click the 'Webpage' button. The 'Preview Webpage' screen will appear.

10) Since this is a new web page, you need to create a new HTML customization file. Click the 'New' button. The 'HTML Customization' screen will appear.

11) Change the word 'Photo Gallery' to something identifiable with the web page. For example, change it to 'Acme, Inc. Employees'. You can also change the other options, including the default HTML style.

12) Click the 'Save' button. You'll be prompted for a name. What you name the file MUST match the name of the web page. For example, if the web page will be named 'employees', name the HTML customization file employees.hcf.

Note: by using the same name and the UseSameNameHcfFile Misc Option, you won't have to specify the HTML customization file each time you add images to an existing web page - it'll be done automatically. You're now back at the 'Preview Webpage' screen.

13) Click the 'Close' button. You're now back at the 'EXIF Editor' screen.

14) Click the 'Close' button. You're now back at the wizard screen.

15) Click 'Next' and specify the web page name. This should match the name of HCF file. For this example, it should be 'employees'.

16) Click 'Next' and confirm that all of the FTP info is correct.

17) Click 'Next', followed by 'Finish' to create the new web page.

You just created a new web page and by including steps #9 thru #13, you made it easier to add future images to it.

Add New Images To Existing Web Pages
To add new images to an existing web page, repeat the same process above except:
  • Skip steps 6 thru 14.
  • Ensure that you specify the existing web page name in step #15.
To make the process even easier, you can also automate any (or all) of the associated tasks.

Note: When uploading, if a file exists on the FTP server you'll be prompted whether to overwrite it. This can get tedious, especially when you're adding new images to an existing web page. You can force the program to automatically overwrite the server side files by (without prompting) specifying the FtpOverWriteExisting Misc Option. If your JPG files never change, you may want to specify FtpNoOverWriteJpg - that will ensure that existing server side files are never overwritten.

Deleting Images From Existing Web Pages
To delete an image from an existing web page named 'employees', delete the original image from the '..\rp30\webpages\employees\' directory. Then recreate the web page, specifying '..\rp30\webpages\employees\' as the image source directory and 'employees' as the web page name.
